Palmetto Dental Arts

Dental facility to accommodate the growing needs of the practice

The Project

This project involves the active expansion of the Palmetto Dental Arts facility in Bluffton, South Carolina. The centerpiece of this 3,374-square-foot ground-level addition is a dramatic two-story entry area featuring impressive wall heights. The structure utilizes a wood-framed construction method, incorporating engineered lumber beams and roof trusses to create a spacious, modern environment that seamlessly extends the existing practice.

The dental practice required a significant increase in square footage to accommodate its growing patient base. Beyond simple utility, the client sought to enhance the patient experience with a welcoming, grand aesthetic. A critical requirement was that the new addition must blend seamlessly with the existing architecture while providing the flexibility needed for future growth.

The primary design challenge lay in balancing the desire for large, open spans—specifically for the grand two-story entry—with the constraints of wood-framed construction. Designing these high walls required careful engineering to resist wind and gravity loads without resorting to more expensive steel framing. Additionally, merging the new structural systems with the existing building required precise coordination to ensure a unified final appearance.

To achieve the open, voluminous feel of the entry area, the engineering team utilized high-strength engineered lumber beams. These components allowed for the necessary long spans while maintaining structural integrity. The roof and floor systems were designed using pre-fabricated trusses, which provided an efficient, lightweight solution that simplified the framing process. Detailed calculations were performed to ensure the tall entry walls were fully compliant with all local wind and seismic codes.

The decision to utilize engineered lumber and wood trusses provided a significant “value engineering” advantage. This approach allowed the project to achieve the “grand” aesthetic of the two-story entry in a cost-effective manner, avoiding the higher costs associated with heavy steel construction. This structural strategy not only met the immediate spatial needs but also kept the floor plan open and flexible for future adaptations.

Currently in progress, the expansion is on track to deliver a larger, more functional facility that perfectly meets the practice’s demand. The resulting structure blends functional design with structural integrity, providing a cost-efficient solution that elevates the aesthetic appeal of the practice through its spacious, modern entry.
